Volcanoes are often described as sources of disaster. Earthquakes, lava and eruptions are feared by humans.
However, for the people who live in the area, the mountain cannot be separated from them. It is their source of income. Fertility and materials provided by volcanoes are sources of sustenance.
This painting, which won the 2017 Merapi Art Competition award, depicts a volcano above the bed. The mountain is a sleeping friend.
In the Koran, the existence of mountains that provide benefits to humans is also mentioned. In Surah An-Nahl verse 81 it is said, “… and He made for you dwelling places in the mountains…” More than that, the benefits for all humans are mentioned in Surah An-Naba verse 7, “And (made ) the mountains as (its) pegs.”
Meanwhile, the disaster from the mountain was also conveyed. Surah Al-Qari’ah verse 5 describes one of the conditions of the Day of Judgment, “And the mountains are like feathers that are scattered.”
